We’re going to be trying an exciting new game during our reining classes on Friday Afternoon in the outdoor, covered arena.
How many times have you sat up in the stands watching a class with a friend and the two of you guessed who won the class? Or you maybe even tried to place the entire 5 places? How many times have you been right? Wanna get serious put your money where your mouth is?
What we’re doing is called a “Calcutta Auction”. Before each class our auctioneer will auction off each horse/rider team entered into the class. All money bid will be put into a jackpot. The bidder who has picked the correct horse/rider team will get all the money in that jackpot.
For example: Let’s say there are 3 riders in Class 330. The first rider is Tommy Lee on Pocket Rocket; second rider is Jed Smith on One Eyed Willy; third rider is Joan Jett on Rock N Roll. Each horse/rider combo is auctioned off. The high bidder for Tommy and Rocket raise $1,000. The high bidder for Willy and Jed puts in $2,000. Joan and Rock goes to $500. Total raised for this class is $3,500. That’s what goes in the jackpot. In this particular case you are bidding on who WINS this class and you have won the bid on Joan and Rock. If Joan and Rock win, you put in $500 but you go home with $3,500 in your pocket.
NOW …. To put a nice twist on things …. We’ll be announcing at the show which PLACING you will be bidding on in each class. Sometimes it’s pretty easy to tell who is going to WIN the class but how well can you guess who is going to get SECOND or THIRD? Not so easy now, huh? In the first class you may be bidding on who WINS …. The second class you may be bidding on who gets SECOND place ….The third class you may be betting on who gets THIRD place. Now it’s going to get interesting.
We’ll have someone available to explain all the rules again at the show. We are also going to take “Proxy” bids on horse/rider teams for each class before the classes if you think you might not be able to make it over to watch . We will have everyone sign up for a bidding number to make it easy when auction time comes. We have a feeling this is going to get quite crazy!! Anyone that has a bidder’s number may bid …. Even our riders can bid on themselves (or their competitors!) If they think they’re going to get SECOND place …. They can bid as high as they want. All the money collected in the “Calcutta Auction” will go to the individual bid winner. Horse/Riders will receive normal payouts from the Gold Star Futurity with their placings but will not get a cut of the Calcutta money unless they are participating as a bidder.
